Chiropractic Care FAQS:
What happens during an adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment refers to a chiropractor applying manipulation to the vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. The objective of this chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, with the goals of increasing range of motion, reducing nerve irritability and improving function. The popping sounds you hear are your joints releasing tiny pockets of gases. A chiropractic adjustment does not affect the bones of either side of the joint, but rather the connective tissue that holds the joint together.
How long do appointments take?
Most initial appointments last as much as 30 minutes. Depending on the length and severity of your condition, follow-up visits can be as little as 5-10 minutes.
Who is chiropractic care for?
Everyone, from growing children to active seniors, can benefit from regular chiropractic care.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Upon arriving for your first visit you will be asked to fill out you initial paperwork. Your initial paperwork is to help the doctor get a better idea of your health history and current needs. During your first visit, your chiropractor will explain how joint dysfunctions may occur, how a chiropractic adjustment is used to correct them, and the many benefits chiropractic has to offer. The doctor will answer any questions or concerns you may have prior to initiating treatment.
After a consultation and exam, the doctor will determine if you may benefit from chiropractic care. If so, you will be adjusted on a comfortable adjustment table made specifically for this purpose. You will remain fully clothed for the duration of your visit, so we recommend you wear non-restrictive clothing to make it easier to rest comfortably while lying down on the table. A portion of your adjustment may be performed while you are face down, while other adjustments may be delivered while you are either on your side, sitting upright or lying on your back.
Will I be sore following a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustment is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort because minimal force and gentle pressure are used. In fact, most patients feel relief immediately following treatment. Any reported soreness after an initial adjustment has been described as similar to that associated with starting a new exercise program. Drinking plenty of water, using an ice pack, and engaging in light stretching after your first visit can help ease any discomfort to promote healing.
